Man dies trying to ‘hot pot’ in Yellowstone hot spring

BILLINGS, Mont. — An Oregon man who died after falling into a scalding Yellowstone National Park hot spring was looking for a place to “hot pot,” the forbidden practice of soaking in one of the park’s thermal features, officials said.

Sable Scott told investigators that she and her 23-year-old brother, Colin, left a boardwalk near Pork Chop Geyser on June 7 and walked several hundred feet up a hill in search of “a place that they could potentially get into and soak,” Deputy Chief Ranger Lorant Veress told KULR-TV in an interview.

As Sable Scott took video of her brother with her cellphone, he reached down to check the water temperature and slipped and fell into the hot pool, according to the incident report obtained by KULR through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Park officials did not release the video or a description of it.

Search and rescue rangers spotted Colin Scott’s body in the pool the day of the accident, but a lightning storm prevented recovery.

The next day, workers could not find any remains in the churning, acidic water, Veress said.

“In very short order, there was a significant amount of dissolving,” Veress said.

The National Park Service did not issue any citations in Colin Scott’s death.

Scott was on a college graduation trip with his sister at the time of his death, which came a day after six people were cited for walking off-trail at the park’s Grand Prismatic Spring.

A week later, a tourist from China was fined $1,000 for breaking through the fragile crust in the Mammoth Hot Springs area, apparently to collect water for medicinal purposes.

Intoxicated Woman Dies After Falling Between Two Midtown Buildings

Early Sunday morning a woman died after she accidentally fell off the roof of the Midtown apartment building where she lived. Police say that Elena Gladkikh, 27, was on the roof of 449 W 37th Street near 10th Avenue around 8:45 a.m. Sunday when she lost her balance, fell off a ledge and landed between two buildings. A police spokesperson said that the woman, whom they believe was drunk at the time, lost her balance and fell from a ledge. She fell five floors, and her body became wedged between two neighboring buildings.

The Post now reports that Gladkikh, who was a consultant for Mary Kay cosmetics, was allegedly with her boyfriend at the time. The two apparently got locked out on the roof, so she called her husband, who was in their apartment down below, to help them get back in. She fell before he arrived, and the boyfriend had to tell the husband what had happened.

The Post adds: "Gladkikh’s date told cops he met her at a restaurant where she bartended part-time. He said she was already drunk when they went to watch the sun rise on the rooftop with a six-pack of beer."

James Proctor, a porter at a nearby building, witnessed the aftermath: "When they brought her out she didn't look alive," he told the Daily News, adding she wasn't wearing any clothing besides her underwear. "The bruises she had, you could tell it was from a fall...She looked really bad." She was taken to Bellevue Hospital where she died.

Woman shot by police during citizen academy roleplay dies

FORT MYERS, Fla. — A woman accidentally shot several times by a police officer Tuesday night during a Citizen Academy at the Punta Gorda Police Department has died, according to the Charlotte Sun.

Mary Knowlton, 73, was reportedly shot several times during a roleplay scenario in which the officer was playing a “bad guy” and Knowlton was playing the "victim," according to Sue Paquin, a photographer who was covering the event for the Sun and witnessed the incident.

The police officer apparently shot at Knowlton with live ammunition instead of blank rounds.

The victim was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital. She was later pronounced dead, according to the Punta Gorda Police Department.

According to the Punta Gorda website, the Citizens Academy is a free, eight-session course of interactive classes to teach "the role and responsibility of the various City departments and services they provide to the community."

News Anchor Dies In Plunge Over Falls

A Georgia morning news anchor plunged approximately 160 feet to her death Thursday after being swept over the top of Rainbow Falls just a day before her 25th birthday, according to authorities.

Transylvania County Sheriff David Mahoney confirmed Saturday that Taylor Terrell, 24, died in the accident.

Terrell, of Conyers, Ga., anchored 41NBC News at Daybreak and 41Today in Macon, Ga. According to 13WMAZ Special Projects Producer Erica Carr, Terrell was an "avid hiker" and had taken Friday off from work.

"(Friday) was her 25th birthday," Carr said. "She was a beloved morning anchor (and) a sweet, beautiful girl. Everybody is devastated here."

On Friday morning, Terrell's parents informed the television station that their daughter was in an accident and did not survive, according to News Director Brandon Long. Terrell had been working with 41NBC since August of 2013. She started as a reporter before she was promoted to an anchor position.

“Taylor was a hard worker with a bright smile. She rose through the ranks from intern to reporter, to weekend anchor, to morning anchor and was eager to prepare for her next chapter,” according to a statement issued by her news station. “This is a devastating loss for us here at 41NBC and most definitely for her family.”

Terrell had been wading in the creek with a friend at the top of Rainbow Falls when she lost her footing on some rocks covered in algae, according to spokeswoman Cathy Dowd with the United States Forest Service. She was then swept over Rainbow Falls by the swift current.

The incident took place just after 4 p.m. Thursday, according to firefighters at the Lake Toxaway Fire Department. Her body had been recovered by 8:30 p.m.

The U.S. Forest Service investigated the fatality with the assistance of the Transylvania County Sheriff's Office. Terrell's death was considered to be "accidental," Dowd said Friday.

Her death marked the first fatality at Rainbow Falls in 2016, according to Dowd. In the past 10 years, there have been seven deaths in the Pisgah National Ranger District.

In Transylvania County there have been seven waterfall deaths since Jan. 1, according to county authorities.

Rainbow Falls is located in the Gorges State Park, about 55 miles from Asheville near Lake Toxaway and the small town of Sapphire. It is one of several waterfalls in Transylvania County that is a popular attraction for locals and visitors.

Officials urge people visiting waterfalls to remember these attractions can be dangerous, and in some cases deadly.

"The best way to enjoy a waterfall is from a safe distance," Dowd said in a press release.

Man Kills Himself Trying To Blow Up Coworker's Home

A man killed himself with a car bomb after detonating another bomb at the home of a former coworker in western Nevada on Wednesday, a neighbor told The Daily Beast.

Two explosions rocked the small, mostly Mormon town of Panaca, Nevada on Wednesday evening in a bizarre attack that police said only injured a boy on a nearby bicycle. The blasts were powerful enough to send some debris a mile away.

Richard Katschke, a retired schoolteacher and coach, is a neighbor of the Cluff family, whose house was targeted by the bizarre bombings. The Cluffs lived in that house with their three daughters, Katschke said, adding that they had recently finished putting on an addition to allow one of their mothers to move in.

Katschke said he and his wife were reading scripture and getting ready for evening prayer when the blast shook their world.

“Out here in rural Nevada we’re used to sonic booms,” he said. “But this was magnitudes above that.”
The first blast came from a car parked out front. Then, another bomb exploded in the back of the house, Katschke said. Joshua Cluff and one of the daughters were not home, he added. Attempts to reach the couple were unsuccessful. A relative declined to comment to The Daily Beast, other than to say the blast did not occur at her house.

One close family friend told Katschke that Tiffany had seen the man, who had worked with her husband at a local hospital, in her backyard, planting the bomb. Another person said the man had knocked on the front door twice, giving them a heads up.

“He told her that if you want to live, you need to get out now,” Katschke said. “He was bent on destruction but not on killing anyone.”

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said in a press release that there was one fatality and one non-life threatening injury. The fatality is believed to be the man who set off the bombs. At a press conference Thursday, officials said the small police department would be trying to reconstruct what kinds of explosives were used.

The blast caused significant damage to the newly finished home, and blew out the windows in the house across the street.

Katschke said that the dead suspect used to work as a nurse alongside Joshua Cluff. (The suspect has not been named by police.)  He was a nice man in his 50s, and Katschke said the man had really gone the extra mile for his mother before she died.

Police said Thursday that there is a related investigation ongoing in another state, and that the bomber was a "disgruntled former employee" of Grover C. Dills Hospital.

“He was fired from his job or released from his job at the hospital,” Katschke said. “He had since moved away. He moved away, so he came back just to do this.”

Yelp executive plunges to her death in the Grand Canyon

A Florida Yelp executive accidentally plunged to her death after stepping out of the way for a man on a popular hiking trail in the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

Collen Burns, 35, was at Ooh Aah Point on the South Kaibab Trail with friends to watch the sunrise on Friday when she tripped and lost her footing while making room for another hiker to walk by.

“She was stepping out of the way for another gentleman to kind of squeeze in, and unfortunately, Colleen kind of got tripped up on her own feet and fell backwards, fell into the canyon,” Burns’ heartbroken friend Jessica Roman told WESH.

“That was the longest, strangest, craziest two seconds of my life.”

Burns’ body was found 400 feet below where she’d been standing.

Earlier on Friday, Burns posted a foreboding photo on her Instagram account of her looking out at the canyon along with the caption: “That view tho.”

Tourist at Machu Picchu falls to his death while jumping for photo near edge of Peruvian ruin

A tourist at the Peruvian ruin Machu Picchu plummeted to his death while jumping up in the air for a photo at the popular tourist attraction.
Oliver Paps, a 51-year-old from Germany, fell 650 feet into a ravine at the Andean archaeological site on Wednesday, police told AFP.
An official witness told the outlet that Paps said, "I'm going to jump in the air — take a photo for me as a memory," before another Machu Picchu visitor photographed him as he fell into the abyss.
He had crossed over a barrier meant to keep visitors safely away from the edge of the mountainous tourist attraction, Machu Picchu's director Fernando Astete said.
Pap’s body was recovered from the ravine where he landed, and will likely be taken back to Germany.
His fall came one day after South Korean tourist Kim Jongim, 28, died after falling into an abyss at the Gocta waterfall in northern Peru, according to the country's Canal N.

EMT Falls To Death While Allegedly Taking Selfie

An EMT from Staten Island fell to her death while hiking in the Adirondacks over the weekend, according to the FDNY Women's Benevolent Association. A family member told the NY Post that Lieutenant JoAnn Restko, who worked out of FDNY-EMS Station 7 in Chelsea, was attempting to take a picture when she fell off a cliff near Lake George.

"I will miss my cousin," family member Lisa Reyes Rodgers wrote in a tribute on Facebook. "She had an adventurous spirit and enjoyed living life to the fullest."

The Essex County Coroner confirmed to NBC that Restko, 37, was hiking at Roaring Brook Falls in Keene, New York on Saturday, about four-and-a-half hours north of Manhattan. Her body was discovered between 80 and 100 feet below a ledge at the top of the falls. A website that details hiking routes in the Adirondacks warns that the falls' "towering rock walls" offer climbs "for the more adventurous and sure-footed."

Restko, an avid hiker, filled her Facebook with pictures from her trips. One posted this month shows Restko standing on an outcropping of rock at high elevation—in the comments section, one friend wrote that the height "makes me nervous for you."

Lenny Joyner, another paramedic posted at Restko's Chelsea station, passed away under similar circumstances in 2012. The 31-year-old was on a 14,000-foot summit near Aspen, Colorado that July when he fell 500 feet to his death.

Star Trek Actor Killed By His Own Car

Actor Anton Yelchin, 27, who played Chekov in recent "Star Trek" movies, was killed in a freak accident early Sunday morning, police told CNN.

Yelchin, who also acted in "Like Crazy" and "Alpha Dog," died outside his home in Los Angeles, according to law enforcement.

Yelchin stepped out of his car in the driveway of his Studio City home at around 1:10 a.m. PT when the car slid backwards and pinned him against a brick pillar and a security fence, causing trauma that led to his death, said Jennifer Houser with the Los Angeles Police Department.

"The victim was on his way to meet his friends for a rehearsal and when he didn't show up, his friends went to his house where they found him deceased by his car," Houser told CNN. "It appears that he momentarily left his car, leaving it in the driveway. He was behind the vehicle when it rolled backward and pinned him to the brick pillar causing the trauma that led to his death."

Houser says Yelchin's family was notified by the friends that found him. She did not know whether the car was running when he was found.

Conductor dies after getting run over by train

Investigators say the conductor on the Royal Gorge route train who died Saturday afternoon fell off the rear of the train as it was backing up.

The train then ran her over, according to the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office. Two hundred passengers were on board at the time.

The conductor has been identified as 28-year-old Leslie Cacy of Canon City. She was killed about four miles away from the station, and had been standing at the door opening when she fell off.

No foul play is suspected in her death, the sheriff’s office said.

An autopsy is scheduled for next week.

Due to the apparent accident, the Royal Gorge Route Railroad announced Sunday it will not be running the train for the next few days. Anyone with reservations will be refunded or may reschedule.

“We are a family-run business, and our team members are like family to us,” the railroad wrote on Facebook. “Our hearts are broken.”

Woman Killed By Errant Umbrella on Virginia Beach

A 55-year-old Virginia woman was killed Wednesday after being struck by a wind-tossed beach umbrella at Virginia Beach, officials said.

Police responded to a call about 5 p.m. for a woman who was said to be in cardiac arrest near 33rd Street on the beach. When police arrived they found the woman was suffering from what was at the time described as a “life-threatening” injury. She later died in an area hospital, police said.

An initial investigation found that a “strong gust of wind blew” an umbrella across the beach and “struck her in the torso” according to Officer Tonya Pierce, a spokeswoman for the Virginia Beach Police department. Police said there is no evidence of foul play.

Police believe she was hit with the tip of the umbrella. The woman was later identified as Lottie Michelle Belk of Chester, Va.

“It was a horrific accident,” said Pierce. She said it was considered a “death due to nature.” Pierce said she had “never heard” of anything similar to this in her 25 years with the department.

Hospital worker dies from heart attack while watching porn

A hospital worker was found dead in The Bronx — with his laptop open and porn playing on it — after suffering a fatal heart attack while apparently masturbating, police sources said.

A colleague found the 48-year-old man on Tuesday morning at North Central Bronx Hospital.

He was naked and appeared to be pleasuring himself at the time of his death, the sources said.

Bronx Homicide was investigating, but said no foul play was suspected.

Man Dies After Falling Into Yellowstone Hot Spring

Officials at Yellowstone National Park have confirmed that an Oregon man reported to have fallen in a hot spring Tuesday was killed, the park said Wednesday.

Colin Nathaniel Scott, 23, of Portland, slipped and fell in a hot spring near Porkchop Geyser Tuesday afternoon after he and his sister left the boardwalk in the Norris Geyser Basin, park officials said in a statement.

Rangers confirmed Scott's death Tuesday evening, the park said. An effort to retrieve his remains was called off Wednesday because there was nothing that could safely be recovered, park spokeswoman Charissa Reid said.

The sister, who saw the accident and reported it to authorities, was not injured, Reid said.

"We extend our sympathy to the Scott family," Park Superintendent Dan Wenk said in the statement. "This tragic event must remind all of us to follow the regulations and stay on boardwalks when visiting Yellowstone's geyser basins."

Tuesday's fatal accident occurred in an area known as the Back Basin. It was the first death related to thermal features in Norris Geyser Basin since 1898, Reid said.

There have been 22 known deaths related to thermal features in Yellowstone since 1890, she said.

Many of the hot springs in the Norris Geyser Basin are at or greater than 199 degrees, according to the park's website. The accident happened about 225 yards off the boardwalk, the park said.

Hazardous conditions in the area forced searchers to take extra precautions, including using experts to make sure the ground was safe, Reid said. Rock and mineral deposits in some places can be fairly thick but in other places can be just a thin sheet with hot water below, she said.

"It wasn't a very secure site," Reid said.

Visitors are prohibited from leaving designated paths at the park's thermal areas. Yellowstone says on its website that more people have died or been injured in the park's hot springs and thermal features than any other natural feature.

Reid expressed condolences to Scott's family, and urged visitors to stay on designated paths. "We have regulations in place for a reason — They're here to protect the features in the park ... they're also here to protect the people in the park," Reid said.

Earlier this week, a father and son suffered burn injuries after leaving the path in a thermal area in the Upper Geyser Basin, the park said.

Man Found Dead in Disney Haunted Mansion

French police have launched an investigation into the death of a Disneyland Paris worker after his body was found in a haunted house.

They confirmed they are investigating the death of a m
ale technician in the Phantom Manor attraction.

It is believed the 45-year-old man was electrocuted while working in the attraction, which features ghosts and other ghoulish themes, and resembles the house out of the 1960 cinematic classic “Psycho.”

A spokesman for the prosecutor in nearby Meaux said the man, who has not been identified, was working on lighting in the attraction when he died.

An autopsy has not yet been performed, but initial investigations point toward death by accidental electrocution.

“An investigation is ongoing,” the spokesman said, adding that police and electrical experts were assisting with the inquiry.

Police have also interviewed colleagues who found the man’s body.

Patrick Maldidier, a staff union representative at Disneyland Paris, said the man, who had worked at the park for over a decade, was hugely popular with colleagues and was “always smiling.”

A Disneyland spokesman said management was “deeply saddened” by the man’s death, and that the company’s thoughts are with “family and relatives.”

The attraction is closed as police investigations continue.

Woman Swept Off Rooftop While Peeing

A young woman was seriously injured after she reportedly went to a Washington Heights roof to urinate and fell two stories onto the roof of an adjacent building. Her friend reportedly told 911 that she was blown off the roof by strong winds.

Police say the incident happened around 2:15 a.m. Wednesday at an apartment building on W. 179th Street near Audubon Avenue. The Daily News reports that Meri Marabyan, 19, and Jesus Plata, 21, had gone to the building to visit a resident there. Police sources told the News the three were drinking rum and beer in the stairwell.

Both women reportedly went to the roof of the five-story building to urinate when Marabyan fell off and landed on the rooftop of the next door building, which is two stories lower. "[Marabyan] was blown off the roof by the wind," Plata told a 911 operator shortly afterwards. The wind speed was around 7 MPH at that time in the city (the wind gust, which is was not recorded at that time and location by Weather Underground, was likely higher).

Marabyan suffered internal injuries, and was taken to Harlem Hospital, where she is listed in critical but stable condition. According to the NY Post, investigators aren't sure whether she was blown off by the wind or if she simply lost her balance and fell.

In a separate incident on Tuesday, 57-year-old Clifford M. Lemay died after falling from the roof of a seven-story office building in Teaneck, NJ. Police have attributed his death to a "horrific accident," with a peak wind gust around 32 MPH in the area around the time of the fall.

Used Car Salesman Killed in Test Drive

One never knows what fate the day might bring when they leave for work in the morning. Imagine the shock of witnessing a fellow used car salesperson pull off the lot to test-drive a used Corvette and learn shortly afterward the customer crashed the Corvette in a high-speed accident, and killed the salesman.

After the smoke clears all of the details of this senseless, fatal accident will come to light, but for now the events that led up to the death of 43-year-old Warren Smale a used car salesperson for CarMax’s Ontario, California location are the following…

According to witnesses at the scene, the driver of the Corvette careened into a tree at speeds estimated to be in excess of 70mph. This man was 28 year-old Alex Demetro of Union City, California. Of note, Union City is a suburb of San Francisco, over 400-miles north of Ontario and it’s not known if Demetro had the means to buy the Corvette, or why he chose such a far away location to shop. Demetro was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony driving under the influence of drugs. Police inspectors did not say if Demetro was injured, but did say he was not suspected of being under the influence of alcohol, but suspect illegal drugs were involved.

The victim, Warren Smale of Montclair, was transported in critical condition to San Antonio Regional Hospital, in nearby Upland, where he died.

CarMax spokesperson Catherine Gryp stated the loss was “an incredibly sad day for the CarMax family. Our hearts and prayers go out to our associate's family. CarMax is working closely with the authorities on the investigation.”

Man shoots self with gun while taking selfies

A 43-year-old Washington state man died Sunday after accidentally shooting himself in the face with what he thought was an unloaded gun.

The man and his girlfriend were at a residence in the 46000 block of Baker Loop Road taking photos of themselves with the gun when the incident occurred, Skagit County Sheriff’s Office Chief of Patrol Chad Clark said.

The girlfriend reported that the pair had done this several times during the day, with the man apparently removing the bullets and then reloading the gun multiple times.

After the last time, however, a bullet apparently remained in the gun, Clark said.

The death is being investigated as accidental, Clark said.

Woman in video promoting prescription drug abuse found dead of prescription drug abuse

A 25-year-old Staten Island woman who appeared in a bizarre rap video about prescription drug abuse was found dead by her boyfriend in her Staten Island home yesterday afternoon. The NYPD said officers responding to a 911 call found Sharissa Turk "unconscious and unresponsive with no apparent trauma" inside the house at 535 Jefferson Boulevard in Annadale. The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death, but police sources tell the tabloids Turk's death is being investigated as a drug overdose.

When Turk was 22 she portrayed a blue drug fairy in a widely-viewed YouTube music video by Staten Island's White Trash Clan. Shortly after the video went viral in 2013, Turk was arrested for selling oxycodone to an undercover investigator. Turk, who was employed by Edible Arrangements at the time, avoided prison time by agreeing to participate in a drug-treatment program.

Incite DaRiot, Turk's fiance at the time and the producer of the "My World Is Blue" video, told Gothamist shortly after Turk's arrest that "the video was made to show the downfall of drug users, and bring attention to the epidemic that every Staten Islander is fully aware of. We thought, 'Let's take a risk, let's address something that's really serious.' We know people have family members that have died because of this shit, so we didn't want to make fun of it."

Turk is the second person who participated in the video to wind up dead. Last August, Gerard Kelly, a rapper in the video, died of “probable acute drug intoxication,” according to the city Medical Examiner’s office.

Proactive Move to Prevent Selfie Deaths in Mumbai

The Indian city of Mumbai has established 16 no-selfie zones in an effort to curb a spike in selfie-related incidents. As the Associated Press reports, the ban applies to areas that police consider particularly dangerous, including parts of the coastline that are not protected by railings. Those who enter the no-selfie zones face a fine of 1,200 rupees ($17.50), even if they don't take any photos.

According to data from the San Francisco company Priceonomics, India accounts for 19 of the 49 selfie-related deaths recorded around the world since 2014, including two recent fatalities. This month, an 18-year-old student died after trying to take a selfie on top of a rock near a dam. He fell into the water and drowned, as did another person who tried to save him. And in January, an 18-year-old woman drowned after trying to take a selfie in front of a popular tourist site in Mumbai.

"THIS IS A NEW PROBLEM FOR US."

"This is a new problem for us," Mumbai police spokesman Dhananjay Kulkarni told CNN this week. "We have identified spots in Mumbai. We want to restrain people from going there so that mishaps don't happen."

Other countries have taken measures to deter risk-takers from snapping photos of themselves in dangerous locations. Selfie sticks have been banned at some train stations in Japan, amid fears that they could cause people to lose their balance and fall onto the tracks. Last year, Russia launched an entire selfie safety campaign that warned of the most dangerous spots to take a selfie, including rooftops and busy roadways.

Indian Prime Minister Narenda Modi has been a frequent selfie-taker, as well, albeit in decidedly less dangerous circumstances.

Man walking behind truck falls into sinkhole

A man in Queen Creek, AZ, apparently lost his life Friday when a sinkhole opened up behind his vehicle as he was walking, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

The man, whose name has not been released, disappeared between 3 and 3:30 p.m. ET in a farm field as it was being irrigated, witnesses told Queen Creek city officials. When the witnesses tried to locate the man, they found only a large hole behind his truck.

The man was walking to the back of the truck and taking off his work belt when he was swallowed, said a sheriff’s office spokesman, Detective Doug Matteson. Matteson acknowledged it was incredibly bad luck for the ground to give way just as the man was walking in the area.

“It’s kind of like getting stuck by lightning,” the detective said. Queen Creek is about 40 miles southeast of Phoenix.

Rescuers later found a body in the sinkhole that was about 50 feet wide and at least 15 feet deep but have had trouble extracting it. Water and mud were flowing through because of the irrigation, Matteson said.

Referee ‘shot dead by player he sent off’ during amateur match

Police in Argentina are searching for a footballer who is said to have shot and killed a referee after being sent off in a match played in the Córdoba province.

According to local reports, the player retrieved a gun from his bag after being shown a red card, returned to the pitch and shot 48-year-old César Flores dead.

A police source told the Efe news agency: “It all happened during the football match. We don’t know [exactly what took place], but it appears the player was angry, fetched a gun and killed him.”

Local reports said Flores was shot three times, in the head, chest and neck, while another player, Walter Zárate, was injured, but is understood to be out of danger.

Authorities in Argentina continue to struggle with violence in football. In June last year a match between Ferro and Tiro Federal was abandoned after a played punched a referee unconscious after being shown a yellow card.

Last month, five players were sent off during a friendly between River Plate and Boca Juniors. The referee Patricio Loustau booked nine others during the game.

First Person Killed By Meteorite

Indian authorities say a falling object that killed a bus driver and injured three others was a meteorite. If proven, it would be the first such death in recorded history.

Experts said other explanations were possible for the incident Saturday in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

The impact of the object left a large crater in the ground and shattered window panes in a nearby building, killing the driver who was walking past.

Images in local media showed a blueish rock, which Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Jayaram described as a "meteorite" -- although scientists say this has not yet been proved.

"A meteorite fell at a private engineering college... and claimed the life of a college bus driver," said the chief minister in a statement late Sunday expressing "shock" at the news.

S. P. Rajaguru, assistant professor at the Indian Astrophysics Institute in Bangalore, said the rock could be a meteorite but further tests were needed.

If proven it would be the first meteorite death of a human in recorded history, he said.

"Most of the meteors never reach the earth surface as they completely vaporise in the atmosphere," he told AFP by phone.

"Hitting the Earth surface is very rare and there have been no deaths in recorded history."

Rajaguru said the missile could be debris from a rocket or a space shuttle.

Meteors are particles of dust and rock that usually burn up as they pass through the Earth's atmosphere.

Those that do not burn up completely, surviving the fall to Earth, are known as meteorites.

Man Found Dead Inside Plowed In Car

A 44-year-old Brooklyn man was found dead in his car Monday afternoon, and authorities believe he died of carbon-monoxide poisoning after getting trapped inside by snow.
Police say that Angel Ginel was found inside his 2003 Lexus around the corner from his home at around 4:38 p.m. yesterday, and was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife told reporters that he disappeared after going out to shovel snow on Sunday. “He gave me a kiss goodbye and said he’ll see me later,” Ramonita Ginel told the Daily News. “Then I kept calling his phone. I kept calling his phone because he didn’t come home last night, I kept calling leaving him messages.”
His car was still running when Ramonita Ginel found him on Monday, and family members say he was trying to charge his phone when a plow came by and trapped him. "“I guess they plowed him back in and he couldn’t get out,” his wife told the Post. “The door was [slightly] open, but I couldn’t open it because of the snow that was there.”
Ginel died of carbon monoxide poisoning while warming up in an idling car outside their home. The woman's husband was shoveling snow away from the car at the time, and the snow may have blocked the vehicle's exhaust pipe, eventually killing them.

Woman leaves party in shorts, freezes to death

When 21-year-old Elizabeth Luebke traveled an hour and a half south from her home in Oshkosh, Wis., to Milwaukee for a concert, she wound up at an after-party wearing a tank top, shorts, and fish-net stockings — and at around 4:30 a.m. left angrily after arguing with a friend, reports Fox6now.com. It was -5.8 degrees Fahrenheit, and the wind chill was a frigid -27.5 degrees.

Security video footage from a nearby business shows her suddenly collapsing in front of a house and eventually stopping moving altogether, reports BuzzFeed. Her body was found by a passerby at 9 a.m., just around the corner from the party.

Luebke, who also went by the name Lana Kane, had frozen to death, but alcohol appears to have been a factor. A friend of Luebke's says she arrived at the party "really, really drunk," while her mother says her daughter had a history of binge drinking and had been hospitalized in October with a blood-alcohol level five times the legal driving limit, reports the New York Daily News.

Luebke wrote on her Facebook page in December that she'd quit drinking, and some of her friends said she'd been sober for the past several weeks.

Tributes online mention her as "one of the last people to deserve this," while police advise against ever walking alone in subzero temps. (This woman froze to death in Georgia trying to help her just-out-of-reach husband.)
