Man Dies On Trip Won On Ellen DeGeneres Show

A 33-year-old man died Saturday afternoon while skydiving with his wife in Australia — a trip she won in a competition on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in January.

He crashed into the ground after a flawless descent that ended with unexplained complications that remain under investigation.

Brandon McGraw, 33, of Hampstead died in Euroa, Australia — which is in Melbourne, Victoria — while skydiving with his wife, Cherilyn McGraw, a special education teacher at Topsail Elementary School.

The couple was jumping with members of Euroa Skydive, an Australian skydiving school.

Ian Matthews, who works at Euroa Skydive, told The Daily News that Brandon was an experienced skydiver with more than “a few jumps under his belt.”

“McGraw watched his wife do a tandem jump before exiting the plane,” Matthews said. “He floated for three or four minutes with a good canopy.

“A short time before landing, he suddenly began turning his parachute dramatically to the left and right and eventually crashed into the ground,” Matthews added.

According to media reports, the emergency call was made about 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Matthews said McGraw had successfully completed steps that the school requires of those making solo descents — including training and providing proper documentation — before taking his last jump.

McGraw’s death marks the school’s first fatality since it opened in 1983, according to the Euroa Skydive website.

The school asserts it has “the best safety record in Victoria without question!” according to the website.

Repeated calls by The Daily News to Euroa Police Department all reached busy signals Sunday afternoon. The department is investigating McGraw’s death.

“The police department is doing an excellent job looking after his family and doing the processes to check equipment and procedures,” Matthews said. “Then it will go to the coroner’s court, where it will be discussed.”

Although a cause of death has not been released, Australian news media have reported high winds in the area may have factored in the tragedy.

Cherilyn McGraw won the trip to Australia on The Ellen DeGeneres Show during the “Stuff Your Down Under Pants” contest while on the show Jan. 16.

85 Year Old Contest Winner Dies Minutes Before Sex With Prostitutes

The elderly grandpa who won a date with 2 prostitutes on the Howard Stern Show choked and died last night ... just before he was going to have sex for the first time in years ... TMZ has learned.

We've confirmed 86-year-old Johnny Orris died in a Lake Tahoe hospital last night ... after choking on his steak at a local restaurant.

Orris appeared on the Stern show back in October with his grandson ... who had entered him in a  contest called "I Want To Get My Grandpa Laid."  Orris said his wife had died more than a decade ago ... and he hadn't had sex since.  He said he fantasized about big-breasted black women.

On the show, Orris won a date with two prostitutes from the famed Bunny Ranch in Nevada ... and flew to Lake Tahoe to claim his prize.

Bunny Ranch owner Dennis Hof tells us Orris came to the ranch last night and chose 2 gorgeous working girls he wanted to have sex with -- Caressa Kisses and Vanity.  But before consummating the date ... Orris went out for a nice dinner with his grandson, Ed.

We're told Orris ordered the steak at Sage Room Steakhouse at Harvey's Lake Tahoe ... and began to choke on it.  Ed and the maitre d' immediately began CPR ... and Johnny was transported by ambulance to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Hof tells us, "He just wanted a steak before having sex with Caressa Kisses and Vanity. The bunnies loved him."

And this is hilarious ... Ed tells us, he felt bad leaving the Ranch without sampling the goods -- especially after traveling so far -- so he banged one of the hookers after his grandpa died. Not Caressa or Vanity, though. That would have been weird.

The best part ... Hof let Ed use his grandpa's coupon for one free roll in the hay.

NJ Man Dies After Getting Trapped In Clothing Donation Box

A New Jersey man died on Monday night after becoming trapped in a clothing donation box behind a Salvation Army Church in Bridgeton.
According to the South Jersey Times, police arrived just after 11 p.m. to find 50-year-old Joseph L. Hanshaw dangling from one of the boxes, having apparently become trapped in its door. The fire department required several minutes to dismantle the door, but it was too late: Hanshaw was pronounced dead at a nearby medical facility.
Authorities speculate that Hanshaw may have been attempting to access warm clothes or a place to sleep, calling it an "unfortunate and tragic death by misadventure."

Guy Crushed to Death by Own Marijuana

Very important lesson for drug traffickers: Do not store your half-ton of weed in the backseat of your car.
A Brazilian drug smuggler did just that, police say, and the man was killed when he crashed into a tree while being chased by police ... because the 1,100 pounds of weed came barreling forward and crushed him against the steering wheel. The Daily Mail has the crazy pictures.
Federal police started the chase when the man didn't stop at a road block, Jalopnik reports, citing local media.
The chase went on for three miles before the as-yet-unidentified man lost control of his car; he was killed instantly.

Newlywed Wife Pushes Husband Off Cliff

A woman in Montana is accused of pushing her husband off a cliff after an argument. The pair had been married for just more than a week.

Jordan Linn Graham made an initial appearance in court Monday to face a charge of second-degree murder. If convicted, she faces life in prison.

According to a criminal complaint, Graham recently told a friend she was having second thoughts about marrying Cody L. Johnson. CNN affiliate KECI reported the couple had been married for just more than a week.

The complaint said the couple argued the night of July 7. Upset, they decided to go hiking in Glacier National Park in Flathead County, Montana, where they continued to fight.

Graham told police that her husband grabbed her by the arm. She turned and removed it.

"Graham stated she could have just walked away, but due to her anger, she pushed Johnson with both hands in the back and as a result, he fell face first off the cliff," the complaint read.

His body was discovered several days later.

Graham's attorney, Michael Donahoe, declined to comment on the case.

According to the complaint, Graham reportedly told a friend she planned to talk with Johnson about her reservations on July 7. The same day, Graham sent the friend a text message saying, "Oh well, I'm about to talk to him."

The friend responded, "I'll pray for you guys."

Graham wrote back: "But dead serious if u don't hear from me at all again tonight, something happened."

Remote Controlled Helicopter Kills Man in Brooklyn

A 19-year-old model helicopter enthusiast  was killed Thursday when a toy helicopter he was flying struck him in the head, a law-enforcement official said.

Victim Roman Pirozek “was known to be aggressive in his flying and often executed tricks.  He was executing a trick when he was struck,” the official said.

The accident occurred around 3:30 p.m. at Calvert Vaux Park, near Shore Parkway and Bay 44th Street in the Gravesend neighborhood in Brooklyn, the official said.

Mr. Pirozek was flying a remote-controlled helicopter worth about $2,000 when it struck him, cutting off the top of his head, the official said. The Woodhaven, Queens, resident was pronounced dead at the scene. His father was with him at the time of the accident, the official said.

“He was the best person ever. He had the biggest heart,” said Mr. Pirozek’s sister, Amy Pirozek. “I think he was just doing it because it was his day off.”

She said he worked as a cargo handler for an airline.

Calvert Vaux Park is a favorite among model helicopter enthusiasts.  There were three or four people in area when the incident occurred.

Mr. Pirozek, who posted videos of his devices’ flights on his YouTube channel, traveled to fly remote controlled helicopters and was vice president of the Seaview Rotary Wings, a Brooklyn-based model helicopter flying club, according to friends at the scene and the group’s website.

Mr. Pirozek’s enthusiasm for the activity is evident on his Facebook page, where nearly every post and photo chronicles his love of model helicopters.

He expressed his joy flying at an Aug. 18 event in Glasgow, Del. A week later, in one of his final posts, he wrote: “Great day for flying, the new frame brace is working great, breaking in some new packs i just got, they are the best that I have flown so far and loving them.”

He was a 2012 graduate of High School For Construction Trades, Engineering and Architecture in Queens, according to his Facebook page.

The field where he was flying is sanctioned by the city as as a model aircraft field. It is also sanctioned by the Academy of Model Aeronautics, a national model aviation organization, and home to an annual event that was held on Labor Day, said a friend at the scene who did not want to give his name.

The mangled helicopter has black and white striped wings, the official said. It came came to rest on its propeller in a grassy area of the park.

Pot Grower Killed By His Own Booby Trap

An Albany county man was killed by a booby trap while riding an ATV on his property Saturday afternoon, and investigators believe the trap was sprung by the dead man himself—to protect his marijuana plants. Daniel Ricketts, 50, was nearly decapitated in the accident, which according to the Times Union was caused by a "fine, nearly invisible wire that was among the fortifications set up around four large marijuana plants."
Albany County Sheriff Craig D. Apple says investigators also found barbed wire and a leg trap similar to the kind used to trap coyotes. Ricketts's property is near sprawling Thacher Park (a great place to watch the sunrise if you're in the area, by the way) and Apple told ABC 10, "The problem here is this could have been a hiker someone coming through putting their foot in a trap. It's ridiculous to [set booby traps] because you're talking about going from a low level charge of possessing marijuana to possible manslaughter." Or to possible decapitation.
Police also believe alcohol was a factor in Ricketts's accident.

Body Of Woman Killed In Elevator Accident Wasn't Removed For Hours

The body of a woman killed in a freak elevator accident yesterday was not removed until nearly 7 p.m.—seven hours after she was crushed to death. And the other passengers in the elevator who helplessly looked on as she died were not freed for over an hour. When they finally got out, they were "in severe distress," Fire Lt. Glenn Berube tells the Post. But it took rescuers much longer to remove Suzanne Hart's mangled body from the elevator shaft.

Hart, a 41-year-old new business executive at Y&R (formerly Young & Rubicam), was stepping into the elevator in the lobby around 10 a.m. when the elevator suddenly shot upward. Police sources tell the Times "it dragged her until she was pinned between the elevator and the wall, between the first and second floors." Witnesses told CBS 2 the car went up halfway to the 2nd floor before the Hart's body stopped the momentum of the elevator. She was pronounced DOA. John Hanna, who owns a suit store next door to the building, told DNAinfo he heard "bloodcurdling yells" after the accident.

One employee who was in another elevator at the time tells NY1, "The elevator was either next to me or one over, I heard this loud 'boom, crash,' and the whole thing kind of shaked. I got off and I didn't really think too much of it, then I heard somebody died. It was pretty extreme. A couple of the girls on my floor were crying and really panicked."

Yesterday one employee told us, "It's an old building (Y&R has been here since the 20s). The elevators are slow and a bit buggy sometimes." A "city-government source" tells the Post the elevator was taken out of service in 2003 because of an unspecified "hazardous safety violation" but that had since been fixed. in June, inspectors found several unspecified “administrative” violations of safety rules regarding the elevators. City sources tells the Post the violations are still listed as “open” on Department of Building records but "appear to offer no explanation for yesterday’s tragedy."

It's not known why the elevator malfunctioned. But a former Y&R exec tells the Times the elevators were old and creaky: "They weren’t the kind of elevators that you stuck your hand in to catch the doors because they wouldn’t stop." Employees were told to work from home today, and Y&R issued this statement:

We are deeply, deeply saddened to confirm one of our employees has died. Our focus at this moment is the well being of our employee’s family and our larger Young & Rubicam family. As you can imagine this is a great emotional shock to all of us. We ask for your cooperation and understanding as the proper authorities look into this terrible accident.

Ad Exec On First Date Plummets To Her Death

A first date ended in unimaginable horror Thursday when an ad exec plunged to her death after the railing of her narrow 16th-floor balcony suddenly buckled.

Jennifer Rosoff, 35, brought Stephen Close back to her apartment on E. 57th St. near First Ave. after they chowed down at Maya, a Mexican restaurant about eight blocks away.

They walked through a set of French doors that open to the balcony. Rosoff was smoking a cigarette and had a drink. She sat on the metal railing about 12:45 a.m., which instantly made Close nervous.

“He advised her not to sit on the rail,” said Paul Browne, the NYPD’s chief spokesman. “She said that she had done it before and wasn’t worried. She didn’t think it was a problem.”
Close, who lives nearby, told detectives that he heard “two cracks or pops.”

The metal railing at Stonehenge 57 bent, sending her falling backward 140 feet. She landed on construction scaffolding outside the first story of a building in front of the Sofrito restaurant and died instantly.
Police questioned Close, who works in real estate, but cops don’t suspect foul play.
Residents heard Close, 35, screaming. And some saw him in the lobby after he emerged from the elevator.

“He was hysterical,” a resident said of the devastated date.

The Department of Buildings was investigating the accident, city spokeswoman Kelly Magee said. As a precaution, the agency issued a vacate order for all balconies in the building. The corner apartments on the higher floors have balconies.
City law requires all buildings over six floors inspect their exteriors, including balconies, every five years. A licensed expert must issue a report declaring the areas “safe,” “unsafe” or “safe with a repair and maintenance program.”

Man Dies After Getting Sucked into Tortilla Machine

A video camera captured the gruesome death of a Guatemalan immigrant who was sucked into a dough-mixing machine at a Brooklyn tortilla factory Monday.

Juan Baten, 22, was fatally crushed when one of his arms got caught in the waist-high tub at the Tortilleria Chinantla factory on Grand St. in Williamsburg.

"I'm still in shock," said widow Rosario Ramirez, fighting tears as she described how Baten toiled at the minimum-wage job to support their 7-month-old daughter and his four brothers in Guatemala.
A surveillance video showed Baten repeatedly reached into the machine to press the dough and speed up the mixing, cop sources said.

At one point, he reached too far down and his arm was snagged on one of the mixer's rotating blades.
The machine then pulled him inside the large vat, and the mechanical arms crushed his head and chest, sources said.

The medical examiner ruled it an accident, but the NYPD and Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating.

OSHA said it had no record of prior violations. State records show the company failed a health inspection in June but passed a followup in October.

    Man Electrocuted Peeing on Subway

A drunken man was electrocuted and killed relieving himself on the third rail in Brooklyn this morning, sources said.
Matthew Zeno, 30, was walking with a friend along the tracks for the southbound G train around 3:10 a.m., at Union Avenue and Broadway in Williamsburg when the horrific accident occurred, cops said.
His 26-year-old pal tried saving him and was also shocked, police added. The friend was able to flag down MTA workers, who in turn called for help, sources said.
Both men were rushed to Woodhull Hospital where Zeno died and the second man was listed in stable condition.
The pair were returning from a bar, cops said.

Man Killed While Having Sex on Strip Club Piano

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A nude, screaming dancer found trapped under a man's crushed body on a trick piano that became pinned against a nightclub ceiling was too drunk to remember how she got there, police said. Authorities on Thursday said they were awaiting the results of an autopsy on James (Jimmy the Beard) Ferrozzo, 40.

His fully-clothed body was found on top of Teresa Hill, 23, a dancer at the Condor Club where Ferrozzo was an assistant manager. Detectives would not speculate on the circumstances of the death.

Ferrozzo probably saved the woman's life with a last-second kick that cut the switch on the motorized piano hoist, said fire Lt. Jim Lyons, whose rescue crew was called to the club. The body provided two or three inches of cushion that kept the woman from being crushed, he said. The baby grand piano had been used for almost 20 years by entertainer Carol Doda, who made her entrance by reclining across the instrument while it was lowered by cable to the stage of the topless club.

"If I were to speculate on the cause of death, it would be asphyxiation as a result of being crushed," Detective Guinther Whitey said.

Police discovered shards of glass and blood spattered in the club. A little blood was found by the bar, but Detective Guinther Whitey said he couldn't be sure where it came from. "The young lady had a couple of cuts on her hand," he said.

The dancer said she had been dating Ferrozzo since her arrival in San Francisco two weeks ago.
No one is certain what caused the piano to rise toward the 12-foot-high ceiling, but something or someone may have bumped the switch, on the wall near the piano, Detective Marvin Dean said.
"I don't see how this could possibly have happened," said a young woman who identified herself as Desiree, a dancer at the club.

"When you get on the piano, it goes up so slow, they should have noticed it," she said. "They could have jumped off."

Hill was rescued after someone heard her shouts for help.

"She was so intoxicated she doesn't even remember getting on the piano," Whitey said. "She just remembers waking up and being pinned on the piano."

Hill was treated for bruises at a hospital.

Woman Falls Off Balcony During Sex

One night six years ago, at a Sheraton Hotel just east of Los Angeles, a woman went over the balcony of Room 813 in the middle of the night.

Officers identified the victim as Sandra Orellana, 27, a single woman from Houston. She was found in a pool of blood, 104 feet down from the balcony of her hotel room.

During their investigation, Robert Lee Salazar, a 33-year-old executive from Houston, came out of Room 815. When Salazar learned about the incident, he told police that Orellana worked for him and that they were traveling together.

Salazar, who was married with two children, told the deputy he and Orellana had been out the night before to dinner, and had been drinking. He said she'd been very drunk, and he had taken her to her room about midnight, closed the door, and left.

But police were suspicious. They had found a pair of men's underwear in Orellana's room, Room 813, and a shoe wrapped up in the bedding at the foot of the bed.

In Salazar's room, Room 815, Rodriguez found the matching shoe and underwear similar to that found in the other room. Salazar soon admitted that he had had sex with Orellano the night before, and that she had accidentally fallen while they were engaged in foreplay on the balcony.

"[I was] rubbing on her, she was rubbing on me. She, she turned around. And then all of the sudden she, she grabbed the balcony and pushed herself up to, to turn over. And when she did that, she just went over," he told Rodriguez.

Salazar never called anyone to report that Orellana had gone off the balcony. He did, however, make two other phone calls - two chilling phone calls that, according to Rodriguez, made him look even more guilty.

Rodriguez arrested Salazar the next day.

Man 'Raped' To Death By Five Wives

A wealthy businessman - and husband of six - has died after allegedly being forced into a marathon sex session with his 'jealous' wives.

Nigerian Uroko Onoja was having sex with the youngest of his spouses when the remaining five are reported to have set upon him with knives and sticks - and demanded that he have sex with each of them too.

Mr Onoja went on to have intercourse with four of his wives in succession, but 'stopped breathing' as the fifth was making her way to the bed in Ogbadibo, according to Nigeria's Daily Post.

Two women have been arrested following the incident in the state of Benue last week, said the report, which used the term 'raped to death' to describe the businessman's fate.

    Kinky Sex, Shocking Death

A kinky sex escapade ended with the electrocution death of a Pennsylvania woman and the arrest of her husband for manslaughter.
According to cops, Toby Taylor, 37, first claimed that his wife Kirsten was shocked by her hair dryer. But he then admitted that the couple was "into weird sexual behaviors," according to a probable cause affidavit. Taylor then explained that he hooks clips to his wife's nipples and "plugs the cord into a electric strip" and shocks her.
On Wednesday evening, Taylor said, Kirsten removed her clothes, attached the clips, and shocked herself. He then picked up the electric strip and shocked her several more times, adding that he had placed a piece of electric tape over her mouth during the jolts.
After the last shock, Kirsten, 29, "fell over on to her face." Taylor initially thought his wife was joking, but quickly realized she was unconscious. He then dressed her in preparation for driving to the hospital, but instead called 911 when she stopped breathing.
Taylor, pictured in this mug shot, told investigators that the couple had "been engaging in electric shock sex and other types of extreme bondage for about 2 years." He was charged yesterday with involuntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment, and was jailed in the York County lockup (where he remains in custody on $100,000 bail).

Couple Falls To Death After Window They Were Having Sex Against Breaks

A couple are believed to have fallen to their deaths when a window they were having sex against gave way, say reports.

The horrific accident allegedly happened in China when the glass pane shattered. The tragic man and woman are then understood to have hurtled to their deaths. Eyewitnesses said the couple both fell to the ground as they clinched on to each other.

A source in China said: “With the two of them holding each other tight, they fell out of the building.”

Shocking photos in China appear to show the couple on the ground under sheets. Blood is splattered near their bodies on the pavement. Medical staff and what appear to be police officers can also be seen examining the scene.

The man and woman are thought to have fallen out of an apartment in the city of Wuhan, central China. Local sites suggested windows in the building were of poor quality.

    Beaver Attacks and Kills Man

A man in Eastern Europe has reportedly died after being attacked by a beaver he was attempting to photograph.
The 60-year-old former serviceman was on a fishing trip at Lake Shestakov, Belarus, with two companions when the group stopped to snap the animal by the side of the road, according to the Daily Telegraph. But the incensed rodent viciously pounced on the victim and bit his thigh.
“It was early morning and already light when they saw a beaver by the road, which was unusual because beavers are nocturnal,” Sergei Shtyk, deputy head of the local wildlife inspectorate, told the British newspaper. “One of them went up to be photographed with it, and the animal attacked him and bit him twice, cutting an artery in his thigh, before running away.”
The unfortunate victim, who hailed from Brest in the country’s southwest, bled to death before an ambulance could be summoned, despite the best efforts of his friends to administer first aid.
Experts estimate that there are around 80,000 beavers in Belarus, with the population growing rapidly since the fall of the Soviet Union as demand for their fur has declined. Beaver attacks are unusual and the rare occasions that the animals do savage humans are usually spurred on by rabies, reports Sky News.
Nevertheless, a video posted on YouTube earlier this week shows a man in Russia’s Tver region, northwest of the capital Moscow, narrowly escaping an attack by a beaver that he was attempting to film.
And similar incidents have also occurred in the U.S.; two young sisters escaped with only scratches during an encounter with a beaver at a lake in Virginia in July, according to the Daily Mail; while an 83-year-old woman was hospitalized in September after being mauled in Fairfax County, Va., reports the Washington Post.
Beavers have extremely powerful jaws and sharp teeth that they use for gnawing through trees to build dams on rivers. Anyone coming across beavers in the wild is advised not to approach or make them feel in any way trapped or harassed.

Former NASA Official Found Dead In Thailand With Rope Tied Around Genitals And Neck

How do we explain it to Timmy?

A former senior NASA official was found dead in Thailand earlier this week after having apparently attempted to perform a bizarre and dangerous sex act on himself.
Paul Milford Muller, 76, "was found with a rope tied around his genitals and waist and another rope tied around his neck, hanging from a knob of his bedroom door" inside a house in Tak province, according toBangkok Post.
A California native and resident of Thailand, Muller appeared to have died from asphyxiation or from a heart attack after a drug overdose. Gawker describes his cause of death as "apparent autoerotic asphyxia." Police reported no signs of foul play.
Methamphetamine pills and paraphernalia as well as "several sex toys" were also found in the room.
Muller's body was found Tuesday, and police suspect he had been dead for about three days. Police were in the process of contacting his family to take charge of his body.
Having graduated from Cal State University, served on the Apollo Navigation Team and worked for 10 years at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Muller had taken to writing during his retirement. His most recent book, Suicide Inc., is described on his website as a "romantic and erotic thriller." Other works includeFlight of the Marbles and Circle of Ouroboros.

Poacher Killed By Elephant He Tried to Shoot

In the savannas of Zimbabwe, home to some of Africa's most iconic wildlife, poaching of elephants is at an all-time high. But as their numbers continue to slip lower despite efforts to curb illegal hunting, the elephants themselves may prove to be a poacher's greatest deterrent.
According to Zimbabwe's Sunday Mail, the trampled body of an illegal hunter was discovered in Charara National Park, following the arrest of his partner late last month. The report indicates that the deceased poacher, Solomon Manjoro, was attempting to gun down an elephant when it charged and killed him.
Manjoro's accomplice, Noluck Tafuruka, and a third man involved in the poaching operation were arraigned last week to face charges of possessing firearms without a licence. Their visit to the park has been described as 'for the sole purpose of poaching'.
It's uncertain why incidents of elephants charging poachers don't occur more regularly, but perhaps as more of the animals have lost family members to poaching, they've grown more agressive to those appearing to be a similar threat.
In recent years, poaching of elephants and rhinos in wildlife reserves in Africa has spiked dramatically, fueled largely by demand for their prized tusks and horns. Meanwhile, both conservationists and wildlife officers have struggled to protect these animals from hunters, a daunting task given the vast areas to be protected and the stealthiness of poachers who often enter the parks under cover of darkness.

Soccer Referee Dies After Being Punched in Face by Teen Player

A referee punched in the face by a teen soccer player in Salt Lake City has died a week after suffering serious internal head injuries.

Ricardo Portillo, 46, was refereeing a game for teenagers last week when he cited a player with a "yellow card." Portillo was taking note of the infraction in his notebook (which soccer referees use to keep track of penalties) when the player, enraged, punched him in the face. Portillo then sat down and began vomiting blood. At the hospital, his health quickly deteriorated.

"He loved soccer," his daughter told CNN. "We just never thought this was going to happen. He loved what he did and it was his passion."

The player, who is 17, remains at juvenile detention. Originally charged with aggravated assault, he will know face more serious charges after the death of Portillo.

Portillo's death comes just a few months after youth soccer players in the Netherlands beat another referee to death.

Man Dies after accident on Tough Mudder Course in Baltimore

An Ellicott City man died over the weekend after an accident on the Tough Mudder obstacle course in West Virginia, the first such death in the three-year history of the outdoor run that bills itself as "probably the toughest event on the planet."
Avishek Sengupta, 28, was with a half-dozen friends on the course Saturday when he encountered the "Walk the Plank" obstacle, in which participants jump into a deep pool of muddy water 15 feet below a wooden platform. Sengupta jumped in but did not resurface and was later flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va., where he was taken off life support Sunday.

The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office in West Virginia is investigating Sengupta's death as an accident, according to Sgt. Ted Snyder, the lead investigator. He said such an investigation is standard after deaths or accidents.

Snyder said Sengupta was taken out of the water by Tough Mudder staff and emergency medical technicians resuscitated him so that his heart was beating and he was breathing, but his brain was "compromised" because of how long he was submerged.

Tough Mudder released a statement Monday extending sympathies to the man's loved ones for their loss. The company said "safety is our top priority."

"As organizers, we take our responsibility to provide a safe event to our participants very seriously," Will Dean, CEO of Tough Mudder, said in the statement. "Tough Mudder is devastated by this tragic accident."

Dan Gemp, Sengupta's best friend, was not at the race but said friends who ran with Sengupta told him it took "four to seven" minutes for a nearby Tough Mudder diver to reach Sengupta.

Ashley Pinakiewicz, a Tough Mudder spokeswoman, declined to comment on how long it took for Sengupta to be rescued. Tough Mudder is cooperating with the local sheriff's office investigation, she said.

Tough Mudder races are designed to test participants' physical and mental abilities with a course the company says was designed by the British special forces. Through 20 obstacles on a 10- to 12-mile course, runners dodge live electrical wires, jump over 4-foot-wide mud pits and climb a muddy hill while being sprayed from both sides with high-pressure water hoses.

Some 14,000 people participated in the Tough Mudder event Saturday in Gerrardstown, W.Va., including Ravens coach John Harbaugh and other members of the team's staff. Pinakiewicz, the Tough Mudder spokeswoman, would not comment on whether the event organizers would discontinue or modify the Walk the Plank obstacle and said future races would go on as planned.

Arsham Mirshah, a friend of Sengupta's who accompanied him on the course, said Walk the Plank was the fourth obstacle the group encountered, about an hour after their noon start time.
Mirshah said he was the first in the small group to jump off the wooden platform into the chilly water. As he left the water, Mirshah said, he turned and saw Sengupta jump, but his friend did not resurface. Another teammate was the first to notice.

Sengupta was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, and was taken by helicopter from there to Inova Fairfax Hospital. Friends said dozens of loved ones came to the hospital Sunday before Sengupta was taken off life support.

Tough Mudder says it has hosted 50 such events since 2009 with about 750,000 participants. They have become popular with adventure-seekers, and events planned for the next few weeks in Ohio, Chicago and London are sold out.
The company says Sengupta's is the first death on one of its courses, though injuries have been reported at other Tough Mudder events. The West Virginia event was staffed with about 75 emergency and safety personnel, the company said.
A man died in Texas last year while crossing a river in an outdoor obstacle course similar to Tough Mudder called "The Original Mud Run."

Obstacles in Tough Mudder, including Walk the Plank, are inspected before the race and built after consultation with engineers on safety concerns, Pinakiewicz said.

Participants in the race must sign an extensive waiver acknowledging their awareness of "inherent risks" in the course that can cause permanent disability or death. The form requires signees to "take full responsibility for any and all damages, liabilities, losses, or expenses" they incur as a result of participation.

The group joked about Tough Mudder's risks before they began, and took it slowly through the course.
"We said in the car, 'Well, this will be a successful day if no one gets hurt,' " Mirshah said.

Woman 'Killed Man By Squeezing His Testicles'

The trial for a woman, who is accused of killing a man by squeezing his testicles in China last year, has begun on Monday, 8 April.
The woman had killed the man over a bike parking issue almost a year ago on 19 April 2012.
The accused, a 41-year-old unidentified woman in Haiku City in the Hainan Province of China, is thought to have become involved in a row with a shopkeeper after parking her bike before his shop to pick up her daughter from an elementary school nearby.
After he protested that she was blocking off access to his business, the woman caught hold of the  42-year-old shopkeeper's testicles and squeezed it so hard.
According to witnesses, while having the man's testicles in her grip, the woman had shouted: "I'll squeeze it to death, you'll never have children again!"
The man went into a state of shock from the pain, and died before he could be treated by paramedics who rushed to the scene.
The final outcome of the trial depends largely on the interpretation of the woman's alleged statement of "squeeze it to death."
The woman may be convicted of murder for intentionally inflicting injury under China's Criminal Law Article 234.
Article 234 of China's Criminal Law reads: "Whoever intentionally inflicts injury upon another person shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not more than three years, criminal detention or public surveillance."
"Whoever commits the crime mentioned in the preceding paragraph, thus causing severe injury to another person, shall be sentenced to fixed- term imprisonment of not less than three years but not more than 10 years; if he causes death to the person or, by resorting to especially cruel means, causes severe injury to the person, reducing the person to utter disability, he shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not less than 10 years, life imprisonment or death, except as otherwise specifically provided in this Law."
For those who are wondering if it is possible to kill a man by just squeezing his testicles, the answer is yes. Last year, urologist and San Diego Sexual Medicine's director Dr. Irwin Goldstein had told Gizmodo such severe testicular pain can result in death.
"The testicles are exquisitely sensitive to touch and there is a huge release of adrenalin when there is excessive force applied to these organs. Testicular pain is referred to the lower abdomen, mesenteric plexus, and causes men to stop abruptly what they are doing, lie on the ground, close their eyes and bend their knees," Goldstein said, giving a scientific explanation for such a death.
"A heart attack could certainly result from severe testicular pain from squeezing," he added.

NJ Golfer Retrieving Ball Killed by Falling Tree

Police say a New Jersey golfer is dead after a tree fell on him when he tried to retrieve an errant ball from the backyard of a home adjacent to an exclusive country club.
Alpine police identified the man as 60-year-old Sung Paik of Union City.
Capt. Michael LaViola tells The Record newspaper Paik entered the yard where workers were removing a dead tree Sunday afternoon. LaViola says the workers yelled for Paik to move but the tree gave way on its own.
Paik's golfing partner and a physician who was also on the course at Montammy Golf Club performed CPR but Paik was pronounced dead at a hospital.
LaViola called the death accidental although local ordinances bar homeowners from hiring workers for such work on Sundays.

    Man Killed Photographing Beaver

A fisherman in Belarus was bitten to death by a beaver, and all he was doing was trying to take its picture, Sky News reports. The man spotted the beaver while fishing with friends at Lake Shestakov, but as he approached to take a photograph, the beaver bit him on the thigh. The animal managed to sever an artery, and his friends couldn't stop the blood flow.
Sky News helpfully reminds us that beavers can, of course, bite through trees. Beaver attacks are rare, though, and when they do occur, rabid beavers are generally to blame.

Man Dies Getting Wisdom Teeth Pulled

A scenario likely common in the nightmares of dental patients became the devastating reality for a 25-year-old San Diego man earlier this month. He died during his wisdom teeth extraction.
Marek Lapinski, the vice president and part owner of San Diego-based Tactical 3D Dimensions, had voiced concern over the March 21 procedure with Dr. Steven Paul in Temecula to his sister. "He was so scared to get this done," Natalie Lapinski told FOX5. "That morning, he texted me and said 'I'm going in. I'll call you when I'm out.' I never heard from him again."
The complications began mid-surgery when Marek began to cough. In response, medical staff administered propofol, causing the patient to go into cardiac arrest. Marek was rushed to the hospital, where he died. A piece of gauze was found in his airway.
"I was told by the hospital they weren't sure if this was all caused from him choking on a piece of gauze," Marek's mother, April Lapinski, said. "Somebody was not paying attention at some point."
Marek, who had no medical issues that the family was aware of, was given at least six different sedatives by the surgeon. Natalie talked to a nurse at the hospital, who said Marek "was given way too much anesthesia." The pulmonary doctor at the hospital told April Marek's death "looked like an overdose to him."
In addition to the apparent overabundance of sedatives, medical records also show that Marek "may have been without oxygen for 10 minutes," said Natalie. Per FOX5:
Medical records show instruments measured of Marek’s oxygen saturation levels every five minutes. For the first 20 minutes of surgery, levels stayed at 99 percent. At 25 minutes, there was no register. At the last entry registered at 43 percent.
The official cause of Marek's death is pending autopsy, and his family plans to take legal action.

Filmmaker Documenting Homeless Life Freezes to Death

Filmmaker Who Immersed Himself in Homeless Life as Part of Journalism Job Application Apparently Froze to Death

An up-and-coming filmmaker who had decided to live on the streets for a week to document the plight of the local homeless population was found dead inside a boarded-up hostel just three days after his experiment began.
Though an official cause of death has yet to be released, friends of 26-year-old Lee Halpin believed he froze to death after overnight temperatures in Newcastle (UK) dipped well below zero degrees Celsius (32F).
Halpin, who had an MA in creative writing and was the founder of a magazine on North East culture, intended to use the week-long documentary to apply for a spot in Channel 4's highly competitive Investigative Journalism Program.
"I am about to go and spend a week being homeless in the West End of Newcastle," he said in a video detailing his plans. "I will sleep rough, scrounge for my food, access all the services that other homeless individuals in the West End use. I will interact with as many homeless people as possible and immerse myself in that lifestyle as deeply as I can."
Friends of Halpin, who last heard from him on Sunday when he asked to borrow a sleeping bag, were shocked to learn of his fate.
"He made the ultimate sacrifice trying to raise awareness about what was happening to other people," said pal Daniel Lake.
A coroner's report will be released in the coming days, but local police say they don't suspect foul play.
