Woman Fatally Struck by Train Leaning over Platform to Look for Train

Yesterday, a woman was fatally struck by a train at Astor Place. The 55-year-old woman, whose name hasn't been released yet, was struck by a northbound 6 train just after 4 p.m. Saturday. Initial reports indicated she may have jumped, but according to witnesses, she was struck after she leaned over the platform: "She turned to look for the train and was hit literally right in the face by it," witness Giancarlo Vinciguerra told us. "The impact was enough to spin her body into the side of the moving train which finally knocked her down, and her leg was then also hit by the side of the train."
Vinciguerra, who described the woman as either Asian or Hispanic, said other people at the station came to her aid immediately: "She was just laying there until another passenger who I presumed was medically trained took her pulse, rolled her over and tilted her head back I guess to make sure her air passage was not obstructed." Those other passengers included Crystal Mojica's sister, a nurse, and a doctor who was there: "[The doctor] proceeded to give her CPR, but the woman's face was so badly disfigured [and] covered in blood that it was not possible to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation," Mojica told the News.
Paramedics took the woman to Beth Israel Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. "The sound that was made when the train hit her was loud enough to have everyone around us turn to see what happened, most of us thought she was dead on impact and I was pretty surprised to see them try CPR, knowing they wouldn't try without getting some vital signs," Vinciguerra added. "It was very sad and I was hoping to hear of some sort of miracle."

John Paul II Crucifix Falls, Kills Man

A man has been crushed to death after a giant crucifix dedicated to Pope John Paul II collapsed, just days before a historic Papal canonisation in Rome.
The 30-metre-high (98ft) wooden and concrete cross fell during a ceremony in the Italian Alpine village of Cevo, near Brescia. Another man was taken to hospital.
The structure was dedicated to John Paul II on his visit to the region in 1998.
In a strange co-incidence, the 21-year-old man named as Marco Gusmini by local media, was reported to live in a street named after Pope John XXIII – who will also be canonised in the ceremony on Sunday, Italian media has reported.
The two giants of Roman Catholicism in the 20th century will become saints on Sunday at a twin canonisation, an event unprecedented in the 2,000-year history of the church.

Camilla's Brother Dies Falling in Revolving Door

Police in New York said today that conservationist Mark Shand, the brother of Prince Charles's wife Camilla, was killed after he slipped and fell while trying to make his way back through the revolving doors of the Gramercy Park Hotel after nipping out for a cigarette shortly before 3am.
Meanwhile courtiers told the Royalist that while Charles and Camilla's trip to Canada on May 18th had not been cancelled, and that the tour remained important to the couple, it was too early to say definitively if it would go ahead exactly as planned.
"Everything's still being worked out," said the aide.
Camilla is understood to be with Prince Charles in Scotland on the Balmoral estate.
Lt. John Grimpel of the New York City Police Department told BNOnews that the accident happened on early Wednesday morning after Shand, accompanied by an unidentified woman, entered the luxury Gramercy Park Hotel in Manhattan at 12:57 a.m. local time and sat at a booth in the Rose Bar.
He later went outside to smoke a cigarette at approximately 2:40 a.m., said Lt. John Grimpel of the New York City Police Department.

“At approximately 0240 hours, Mark Shand attempted to re-enter the hotel through the revolving doors,” Grimpel told BNO. “Mark Shand unexpectedly fell backwards, striking his head on the pavement. The incident was also captured on the hotel’s video surveillance system.”

Grimpel said 911 was called at about 2:50 a.m. and Shand was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by doctor Spiros Franjof at 11:25 a.m.
The New York Post quoted a source saying, “He had been taking blood pressure medication and had experienced some dizzy spells.”
Shand earlier on Tuesday night had attended an auction at Sotheby’s which raised $1.6 million for charity. Guests included Alexander Gilkes, Diane von Furstenberg, and Princess Eugenie, who is now living and working in New York.
Early this morning William and Kate released a statement which said: "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were saddened to learn this morning of the tragic death of Mark Shand. Their thoughts are with The Duchess of Cornwall and her family at this time."

Couple Found Dead in Hot Tub with Empty Gallon of Vodka Nearby

A 66-year-old woman and her 58-year-old boyfriend were found naked and dead in a still-running hot tub — with a nearly empty gallon of vodka on the floor nearby, police sources said.

Alicia Wieczorkiewicz and Jacek Crockiewitz were facing each other in the tub in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, when they were found around 1:50 p.m. Sunday, the sources said.
They had their backs propped up against the sides of the tub and a nearly empty clear, gallon bottle of Tanqueray Sterling vodka was lying nearby in the Nassau Ave apartment.

The medical examiner's office is investigating. No criminality was immediately suspected.

Man killed by Murphy Bed He Put Together Himself

A Staten Island man trying to install a Murphy bed in his apartment was immediately killed when the contraption suddenly broke, his family claims in a lawsuit.
Joseph Annunziato, 32, had purchased the queen-sized bed, which connects to the wall and can be folded up and hidden away, from Murphy Bed Express in Manhattan, according to court papers.
The bed was down when the December 2012 tragedy occurred. But it popped back up and struck Annunziato. “It was a defective bed, and it snapped with such force that it crushed his skull and severed his spine,” family attorney Elias Fillas said. “It was instant. It was just like a gunshot.”
The family claims the Chelsea store was negligent by selling the bed “without instructions, warnings and all pieces necessary to properly and safely assemble the bed,” according to the Manhattan Supreme Court papers.
Modal Trigger
Joseph Annuziato
Annunziato had bought the bed in 2011, and it came with “parts and pieces” not intended to go with the product, which was “unsafe, unmerchantable and unfit for use,” the family alleges.
The Annunziatos are seeking unspecified damages.
A manager for the store denied any knowledge of the lawsuit and claimed the company had delivered a bed to an Annunziato family in Midtown but not one on Staten Island.
It’s not the first death reported in connection with the space-saving device, invented in San Francisco in 1900.

Woman Falls To Death Trying To Climb Into Boyfriend's Kitchen Window

Early Friday morning, a 29-year-old woman fell to her death from a building in Williamsburg after she attempted to climb into her boyfriend's apartment via a kitchen window. "I climbed out there and held her while she was fading," Alex Douglas, 42, told the Daily News about comforting his girlfriend Hannah Shaw after the fall. "I’m exhausted. I can’t sleep. It’s been horrible."
Douglas and Shaw, who have been dating for a year and a half, got into a fight Thursday night while out at Lucky Dog. Douglas said Shaw told him she was going back to her place on S. 4th Street: "She ended up not going home. I ran into her on the street outside my place with some other guy," said Douglas. "I did invite her in — and then told her to leave. I told her not to come over."
Police say Shaw, who was drunk at the time, went to the roof and attempted to climb down into the apartment through the kitchen window by holding onto a set of hanging cable wires for support. She fell and landed on a roof three floors below his fourth-floor apartment; Douglas had to crawl through a neighbor's window to get to her. She was rushed to Woodhull Hospital around 4:40 a.m., where she was declared dead.
Police say no criminality is suspected, but the investigation is ongoing.
Shaw, an aspiring fashion designer who designed her own jewelry, had launched Hannah Shaw Designs after she moved to NYC in 2007, and recently worked for landscaping company Jungle Design NYC. "This is just a really tragic accident. She was a lovely roommate. She was always happy and so kind and caring so much,” Ada Vesti, a Swedish book publisher who lived with Shaw and another woman, told the Post.d up not going home. I ran into her on the street outside my place with some other guy,” said Douglas.
