Man Swept Out To Sea During Baptism

A 43-year-old man who was reportedly swept out to sea at the Rancho Guadalupe Dunes Preserve during a baptism ceremony this morning, had not been located as of 6 p.m., according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.
The man was swept out with two other people just before 10 a.m., according to Mauro Cervantes, the pastor of the Santa Maria church Jesus Christ Light of the Sky.
The other two people were able to return to shore, he said. Emergency crews responded to the beach and began searching as a group of participants in the baptism ceremony, most of whom were speaking Spanish, waited in the parking lot.
Cervantes said there were about 25 people at the ceremony a couple of hundred yards north of the parking lot. The church performs such baptism ceremonies two or three times a year, he said. Cervantes did not identify the missing man.
In addition to Santa Barbara County fire crews and the agency’s water rescue team, others helping search for the missing man were from Guadalupe, Vandenberg and Santa Maria fire departments and the Santa Barbara County Search and Rescue team. Also involved were helicopters from the county Air Support Unit plus the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard also sent a vessel from Morro Bay, according to Capt. David Sadecki of the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.
Diondray Wiley, a battalion chief with the county fire department, said the search was being conducted to the south of the spot that the man disappeared because of the ocean currents.

Man Killed By Train Checking on Train

Transit police this morning identified Frank Farriella, 50, of Middlesex Borough as the man struck and killed by a train in an accident Tuesday that left four others with injuries.

Farriella leaned into the path of the oncoming train from the station platform, according to NJ Transit. He was struck and killed. Four people waiting on the platform were injured by flying body parts, according to NJ Transit.

Three of the injured were treated at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

They were identified as:

  • A 64-year-old woman with multiple fractured ribs
  • An 83-year-old man complaining of back, neck and head injuries
  • A 27-year-old man complaining of head pain
  • A fourth person with unspecified injuries declined medical treatment.

The accident remains under investigation, officials said.

NJ Transit this morning released an advisory to all train riders.

“NJ Transit would remind customers that for their safety, we continue to ask that they remain behind the yellow line until the train has arrived and the train doors have opened,” William J. Smith, senior public information officer, stated in an email to the media.

“Additionally, customers are reminded that for their safety, NJ Transit trains can operate on any track, at any time, particularly along Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor line where trains often operate at high speeds,” Smith stated.

According to NJ Transit, 300 people were aboard the train, and nobody on the train was hurt.

Woman Dies After Attempting to Give Herself a Boob Job With Vaseline

A 39-year-old woman died of a pulmonary embolism after injecting herself with Vaseline in a home breast augmentation gone wrong.
Sonia Perez Llanzon had difficulty breathing in the weeks after she injected her breasts with petroleum jelly, reports Rosario, Argentina newspaper La Capital. When she went to the hospital, doctors found a blood clot in her lungs, caused by the Vaseline entering her bloodstream.
Llanzon died March 6, after a month-long hospital stay.
"She denied everything at first but then confessed she had injected Vaseline into [her breasts]," said Julio Pla, Head of Surgery at the hospital where Llanzon was treated.
"I've never seen a case like this. The human body has antibodies to remove bacteria and viruses but it hasn't got any mechanisms against this type of product."
Llanzon was in good health prior to the botched home operation. The Huffington Post reports she was a marathon runner and boxer.
She's not the first to use petroleum jelly in a failed home augmentation: Vaseline penile injections have been a dangerous trend in Asia for some time.

Pastor Admits Affair, Dies of Heart Attack

Bobby Davis admitted that he had an affair and then died of a heart attack right after. On March 14, NewsOXY reported that Davis, a pastor, had a massive unexpected heart attack after coming clean about his extramarital affair after Sunday's mass at Miracle Faith World Outreach Church (which he founded) in Bridgeport, Conn.
"After the service on Sunday, the bishop’s family asked us to remain in the church and the bishop confessed to us something that happened long ago. He wanted to come clean with all of us. He wanted to ask our forgiveness," said parishioner Judy Stovall (via NewsOXY).
Bobby Davis' affair wasn't the reason he died -- but many believe that the stress of it all may have contributed to his heart attack. Davis and his wife, Christine, recently celebrated their 50-year wedding anniversary. It's unclear when he had an affair but it is clear that he wanted forgiveness -- that he was ashamed and that he wanted to come clean about what he had done. Some believe that it was his wife who encouraged him to tell churchgoers of his misstep -- and their support was overwhelming.
"We were shouting, 'We forgive you, we love you,’ but the stress of all of it — he had a heart attack. I held his head as he lay on the floor … Our congregation is hurting now," continued Stovall. Davis was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
After Bobby Davis' affair admission and subsequent death, police launched an investigation. It is unknown if police suspect foul play could have been involved.

Man Killed When Tree Falls On House

HOPATCONG — A resident of Maxim Drive was killed Thursday afternoon when a large tree fell through his home and hit him as he sat in a recliner in his living room, according to borough police.
The name of the male victim, in his early 60s, is being withheld pending notification of his entire family, Hopatcong Police Lt. Thomas Kmetz said.
Police were called to the Maxim Drive home at 3:18 p.m. and told a tree had fallen on the yellow two-story home.
The nearly 80-foot oak tree, which uprooted from a rocky area, cleaved through both floors of the home. It also fell on the house next door, damaging the roof.
Kevin O’Hara, a neighbor on Lines Avenue who did not know the victim, said he was walking his dogs nearby when he heard a “tremendous boom.”
“It sounded like a house came down,” he said. “It didn’t sound like a tree.”
Sgt. Joseph Magrini and Patrolman Nick Maresca responded, entered the home and found the man pinned entirely beneath the tree except for his legs, Kmetz said. They also found a small fire caused by downed wires.
The fire was put out by Maresca with a fire extinguisher. Magrini suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to St. Clare’s Hospital in Dover for treatment, Kmetz said.
Two dogs in the house were rescued. The animals were not hurt, Kmetz said.
The victim’s wife, who was not home at the time of the
incident, arrived soon after and stayed nearby in a neighbor’s house.
The Hopatcong Fire Department and the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office were also called to the scene.
At about 6:30 p.m., a crew from Tree King of Landing began removing the tree so that police and fire officials could get to the victim. Floodlights were set up nearby so that work could continue into the night.
Sean Rowland, meteorologist with WeatherWorks in Hackettstown, said wind gusts in the area around Hopatcong were at 30 to 35 mph at about 3 p.m. The National Weather Service recorded a wind gust of 41 mph in Hackettstown Thursday afternoon.
