The sudden and tragic occurrence will make for a truly sad holiday season “without his presence and smile,” a friend said.
Chad Adams, 41, fell asleep in a trash bin in Fort Worth, Texas, where he was seeking warmth Tuesday night, reported local outlet NBCDFW.
The sanitation truck dropped Adams along with the bin’s other contents into the compactor the following morning.
The driver engaged the machinery that fatally cracked Adams’ pelvis. The sanitation worker reportedly stopped when he heard Adams screaming, Officer Sharron Neal told The Associated Press.
Paramedics performed CPR as they rushed him to the emergency room, according to officials from MedStar Emergency Medical Services.
Adams died during surgery at John Peter Smith Hospital.
Several early reports said Adams was homeless, but a friend claimed that he lived somewhere in Burleson, Texas. He also described Adams as a deeply compassionate and friendly man.
“He would give the shirt off his back to help anyone who needed it,” the friend said.
Adams “had a great heart and he will be missed!” his niece wrote in the comments section beneath initial coverage of this incident by NBCDFW.
