Man Dies Buried Alive Trying to Set World Record

A man in Sri Lanka buried himself alive in order to set a world record, but only managed to get himself killed.
Janaka Basnayake's family and friends reportedly helped him dig a 10-foot hole in the town of Kantele, about 137 miles north of the nation's capital, Colombo, according to London's Telegraph.
The 24-year-old climbed into the hole, which was sealed using soil and wood, around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
When they pulled him out around 4 p.m. on Sunday, Basnayake was unconscious, officials said. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The man's mother, LD Leelawathi, said her son was fond of doing bizarre stunts since he was a boy, according to the Lankadeepa newspaper.
Basnayake tried the same stunt before, his mother said. Once he was buried alive for two and a half hours, another time for six hours.
Guinness World Records does not list a record for being buried alive.
A British man claimed to have set a record for being buried underground for three months in 1998. However, Guinness would not recognize it at the time because it did not want to encourage dangerous stunts, BBC News reported.
