Man Dies on Cocaine Fueled Bender to Celebrate Beating Cancer

A father who went out to celebrate after beating cancer died when he drunkenly fell down a cliff while trying to find somewhere to sleep off the alcohol, an inquest heard.

Adam Fenton, 31, from Cornwall, was found at the bottom of the 50ft rockface after a night out with friends to mark his recovery from a highly aggressive cancer.

He had been diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma nine months earlier but got the all-clear just three weeks before his death after gruelling chemotherapy treatment.

A toxicology report found Mr Fenton had 190mg of alcohol in his blood - two and a half times the drink-drive limit - and 96mg of cocaine.

Recording a verdict of accidental death, coroner Andrew Cox said it was likely Mr Fenton had been trying to find a quiet spot to sleep off the alcohol.

At the time, the roofer was planning his wedding to Carly Blackman, 33, who had warned him to sleep somewhere else if he had been drinking.

Mr Fenton - father to daughters Macie, six, Maddison, five, and step-daughter Bayleigh, 13 - had a history of being aggressive and emotional after drinking.

The coroner at the hearing in Truro said he was last seen on CCTV around 3.30am on the day of his death leaving a nightclub in Newquay.

His body was found three hours later on July 29 by a dog walker near Towan Beach in the town.
DC Jazz Yewen, from Newquay police, said Mr Fenton had taken an unusual way home, and couldn't explain why he didn't take a more direct route.

Due to the zig-zag nature of his route, it took Mr Fenton six minutes to complete a one-minute journey.

DC Yewen said: 'We know that Adam left the pub at 3.33 in the morning. Instead of carrying on the road he then turns left into beach road.

'He could have got to the same location by walking straight down the road. He's been around Newquay for a few years, the spot was a bit out the way - not many people walking past.
'I don't think it's unfair to say that on that night, people were giving him a wide berth because they knew what he was like. There was a discussion that if he was going drinking, he wouldn't be allowed back in the house.'

Mr Fenton's mother, Linda Fenton, stressed that she thought it was unlikely his death was suicide.
She told the inquest: 'He would not have gone over there and jumped. If he felt that down, it would have been when he was being treated for cancer, because he was very unwell - but even then he said to me "I've got nine lives, mother".'

Coroner Mr Cox said: 'The alcohol and the drugs that were found in the blood samples have not had a direct impact on the death.

'That being said, both the alcohol and the cocaine may have affected his judgement.
'Mr Fenton had finished work and been paid and went out with his work colleagues.
'He had gone into Newquay for a drink. The evidence I have seen is that Mr Fenton had some difficulties managing his alcohol consumption.

'There is no evidence that he had been aggressive. He had much to live for and was in a comparatively good place.

'If he wasn't going to the toilet, he may have been going somewhere to sleep off the alcohol he had drank. Miss Blackman made it very clear to Mr Fenton that if he was going to drink he had to sleep elsewhere.

'I do not think he had any intention to go over the cliff edge. This has been a deliberate act with an unexpected outcome.'

At the time of his death, on behalf of her distraught daughter, Carly's mother Rebecca Watson, 53, said: 'He got diagnosed eight or nine months ago and it was one of the most aggressive forms of cancer and in his heart, lungs and lymph nodes.

'He had six months of chemo and we thought we were going to lose him then. It was a miracle he got through it.

'We never thought he would come out the other side but he did. They said that the tumours had all shrunk. They couldn't say he was in remission but he had a scan and they had all gone.

'We were celebrating. We thought he would never get through it but he responded to the treatment. It was unbelievable. He got the all-clear three weeks ago and now he's dead.

'They were about to get married and now the songs they picked for their wedding will be played at the funeral.'

Mr Fenton was diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma - blood cell tumours - around nine months before his death.

At the time of his death, he was still too poorly to work, but Ms Watson said he gathered the strength for his first night at the pub with friends on the day he died to celebrate his survival.

The family declined to comment after the inquest.

Twin Sisters Swept Away by Rogue Wave on Vacation

A "rogue wave" swept twin sisters out to sea, drowning them, during a vacation to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, earlier this month, family members said.

Beverly Ann Skripsky of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Barbara Jo Thomas of McKinney, Texas, were taking a morning stroll Oct. 22 when they were suddenly overcome by a 15-foot wave.

"You had two wonderful people just walking on the beach and full of life a couple hours before that, and they're now gone," said Steve Thomas, Barbara's husband.

The sisters were killed on the third day of what was planned to be a week-long vacation. Thomas remembers the last time he saw his wife alive.

"My last memory was, 'Come with us and go on the walk,'" said Thomas. "And I didn't go. I literally watched her walk out the door and she wanted me to go with her."

More: 'Flatliners' Michael Douglas heard angels singing when he nearly died drowning

When the sisters didn't return, Thomas and his family alerted authorities and went looking for them.

"We found one of their sandals, and when we found the sandal, it was like my head told me they were gone, but my heart hoped against hope," said Thomas.

“I can’t imagine how fast it was moving, but it went from 10 feet to 15 feet in seconds,” Thomas told NBC-5 Chicago. "They found two women out at sea and I’m thinking, 'Great — they found them,' and I say, 'Are they OK?’ and he says, ‘I’m sorry to tell you, sir, but they’re deceased.'”

Rogues waves, as explained by the National Ocean Service, are greater than twice the size of surrounding waves and come unexpectedly from directions other than prevailing wind and waves.

Recognizing the hazard, the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico issued a warning regarding dangerous wave conditions — strong currents, rip tides and rogue waves — in the coastal areas of Baja California Sur, to include Cabo San Lucas.

"Not all hazardous beaches in this area are clearly marked," the warning reads. "Swimmers, waders and even people simply walking along the beaches have been washed into the ocean by rogue waves. Some have drowned and others have disappeared."

Thomas experienced it, firsthand.

"[The wave] went up five feet every second, from five feet to 20 feet, and I was literally just looking at a wall of water," Thomas said.

The Thomases started dating in middle school and had been married for 45 years. Thomas remembers his wife as a kind, magnetic woman who loved helping others.

"Anybody that knew her loved her," said Thomas.

The twins were both retired and enjoyed traveling together. The pair had recently returned from a trip to Dubai, Thomas told the news station.

"Lifelong best friends, the twin sisters were inseparable as they planned family get-togethers and joint vacations throughout their lives," according to the sisters' obituary on Legacy.com. "They will both be truly missed by all who knew their friendly smiles, warm personalities, and kind unwavering spirit to help anyone in need."

Thomas hopes their story will help save someone else.

"There are certain beaches there that are killer beaches," said Thomas. "If you're out on the beach or in the ocean, you need to be very, very cautious of what's going on around you."

Woman dies after jet engine air blast on beach

A New Zealand woman has died on the Caribbean island of Sint Maarten after the blast from a powerful jet engine knocked her to the ground.

The incident happened at the famous Princess Juliana International Airport, which is just metres from the sea.

Beachgoers can walk up to the airport fence as planes take off.

Police said the 57-year-old woman had been holding on to the fence before the force of the jet engines threw her backwards, causing serious injury.

She was taken to hospital for treatment, but died later.

The particular stretch of beach on the Dutch island is popular with tourists, partly because the planes fly extremely low over the sand before landing.

The beginning of the runway is just 50m (160ft) from the fence on Maho beach, and about the same distance to the waterline.

There are prominent warning signs in the area instructing beachgoers not to stand near the fence because of the dangerous air blasts.

Despite the danger, a number of videos circulating online show tourists clinging to the fence to prevent being swept away - and in some cases, almost being lifted off the ground.

The island's tourism director, Rolando Brison, told the New Zealand Herald he had spoken to the family of the dead woman.

"I met with the family of the deceased this evening and while they recognised that what they did was wrong, through the clearly visible danger signs, they regret that risk they took turned out in the worst possible way," he said.

The newspaper also said the plane taking off was a Boeing 737, a large commercial jet. A number of local media reports said the woman struck her head on concrete when she was blown back from the fence line.

In a statement, Sint Maarten police said they visit the area daily to discourage tourists from clinging to the runway fence.

"The landing and taking off of all types and size of aircrafts at the international airport of Sint Maarten is well known world wide as major tourist attraction," police said.

"Many tourists come to the island to experience the thrills of the landing of approaching aircrafts flying low above their heads and the holding on to the airport fence and standing in the jet blast of large aircraft taking off. Doing this is, however, extremely dangerous."

Fitness Blogger Killed by Exploding Whip Cream Can

A well-known lifestyle blogger in France has been killed by an exploding whipped cream dispenser.

Rebecca Burger's death was announced on Facebook in what her family called a "domestic accident".
A warning against the faulty dispensers was posted to her Instagram account, saying it had "exploded and struck Rebecca's chest, causing her death".

French media reported she had died of cardiac arrest after the incident, despite medical attention.
The popular fitness and travel figure was well-known in France, with some 55,000 Facebook fans and 154,000 followers on Instagram.

One of Ms Burger's family members took to Instagram, warning readers not to use the dispenser, saying that tens of thousands of "defective devices" remain in circulation.

A whipped cream dispenser works by injecting gas into a metal container, keeping the entire dispenser under high pressure.

One French consumer group has warned readers for years about faulty connectors on the gas capsules, causing them to break and expel at high speed.

The injuries caused range from broken teeth and tinnitus to multiple fractures and, in one case, the loss of an eye, consumer magazine 60 Millions said. But the magazine says new dispensers made since 2015 appear to be safe.

In 2013, one victim of an exploding cream dispenser told RTL radio: "I had six broken ribs, and my sternum was broken.

"At the hospital, I was told that if the shock and blast had been facing the heart, I would be dead now."

The number of accidents prompted the government office for consumers to issue a warning, saying the accidents stretch back as far as 2010, and can occur at any time - even after years of use.

At least one manufacturer issued a product recall - but a year after that recall, only 25,000 were returned out of 160,000 sold, Le Parisien reported.

Man Dies In Cesspool Collapse

A worker installing a cesspool at a Huntington home Wednesday afternoon was killed after the rim of a freshly dug hole collapsed, burying him beneath a large mound of dirt, Suffolk police said.

Edward Sinnott, 59, of Huntington, was pulled from the hole just before 7 p.m., police said, and pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant with the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office.

Sinnott, who worked for Antorino & Sons in Huntington, and other workers, were in the front yard of the home on Beech Place at about 12:50 p.m. when the hole gave way and collapsed into itself, police said. A second worker fell into the hole but got out as the dirt poured in.

Immediately after the collapse, other members of the crew frantically tried to dig Sinnott out of the pile. First responders from several fire departments soon arrived to help.

Police blocked off several streets to traffic in the surrounding area, cordoned off the home with yellow tape, and kept gawkers safely away from the scene as efforts to save Sinnott continued.

Crews used a crane and other equipment, including a tractor-size device designed to suck up large amounts of dirt. By about 2 p.m., as many at the scene realized the likelihood Sinnott had survived faded, residents appeared visibly despondent.

“I’ve never heard of anything like this,” said Regina Sineno, 51, who lives nearby. “This is very sad.”

No one answered the phone at the Beech Place home.

A video shot at the moment the hole collapsed shows a steel crane claw hauling dirt out of the hole as the ground first gives way under Sinnott. Then another worker is shown plummeting into the cascading dirt but he grabs onto the rising claw and is pulled to safety as Sinnott disappears from view.

Police said the man was not injured.

Town of Huntington spokesman A.J. Carter said the cesspool “has rings that go into the ground and two rings were in when the worker fell into the hole and it collapsed over him and he got buried.”

Carter said the worker was directing a crane when the hole collapsed.

Responders included the Huntington and Huntington Manor fire departments, officials from the Town of Huntington, Suffolk police Second Precinct and Emergency Service Section officers, and Nassau County emergency service officers.

An official with Occupational Safety and Health Administration arrived at the scene later Wednesday and the agency will investigate the collapse.

Man Killed After Jumping Onto Side Of Dump Truck

A 29-year-old man died last night after police say he jumped onto the side a DOT dump truck in midtown and was subsequently knocked off and crushed under the vehicle's wheels. The incident happened around 10 p.m. when the unnamed man jumped onto the driver's side of the truck and clung to the vehicle, standing on a diesel tank foot rail as the driver headed west on 51st Street, according to police.

The driver apparently did not realize the man was clinging to the side of the truck, according to a preliminary investigation. The NYPD says the truck was rolling by a construction site on 51st Street between 8th Avenue and Broadway, "which contained concrete barriers with metal fencing attached. As the truck passed the concrete barriers, the victim's backpack became entangled with the metal fence causing the victim to fall to the ground where he was run over by the truck's rear tires."

EMS responded and pronounced the man dead at the scene. The NY Post interviewed a witness who offered more details about the grisly incident:

The unidentified victim was seen moments before the fatal accident getting into an argument with the truck driver as he tried to cross into the path of the oncoming vehicle as it headed westbound on 51st Street at Broadway, according to a witness.

“Him and the driver had words. Basically they was right there [51st street] and [victim] just put his hand up like ‘I’m crossing here,’ and they had attitude going back and forth,” said the witness who asked to remain anonymous.

After the brief spat, the truck kept driving. But the man ran after the truck, climbed on to the driver’s side and tried to hold on before realizing he didn’t have enough room to clear a construction fence on the south side of 51st Street.

He then made a desperate bid to dismount the 14-wheeler, only to be dragged under and killed, according to police sources.

The driver remained at the location and has not been charged, but police say the investigation is ongoing.

A DOT spokesperson said the truck was carting asphalt to a nearby paving job.

Big Game Hunter Crushed by Elephant

A South African big game hunter died after being crushed by an elephant cow that had been shot on a game reserve in Zimbabwe at the weekend.

Theunis Botha, 51, was leading a hunt with clients when the group accidentally walked into the middle of a breeding herd of elephants at the Good Luck Farm near Hwange National Park late on Friday afternoon, Zimparks spokesman Mr Simukai Nyasha said.

Three of the elephant cows charged the hunters. Mr Botha fired a shot from his rifle but he was caught by surprise by a fourth cow that stormed them from the side, the Afrikaans news site Netwerk24 reported. One of the hunters shot the elephant after she lifted Botha with her trunk. The elephant then collapsed on top of Mr Botha, who has five children with his wife Carike Botha.

Mr Botha was a highly regarded houndsman and frequently led leopard and lion hunting safaris with his pack of dogs.

The website of his company Game Hounds Safaris says he pioneered traditional European-style “Monteria hunts” in southern Africa.

In Monteira hunts large packs of dogs are used to drive deer and boar towards hunters who then open fire on the animals.

Mr Botha was a specialist at hunting leopards with his big game hounds.

He would often travel to the United States to find wealthy customers to take part in trophy hunting in southern Africa.

Mr Botha’s body was taken to Hwange Colliery Hospital mortuary on Saturday.

Condolences poured from hunters, who mourned the death of a “world-class houndsman” after Mrs Botha announced her husband’s death on their joint Facebook page.

Mr Botha was close friends with Scott van Zyl, 44, who was killed by crocodiles while hunting in Zimbabwe last month.

Mr Van Zyl was on a hunt at the Chikwaraka camp in Zimbabwe when he disappeared on April 7.

His backpack was found on the banks of the Limpopo River days later.

DNA samples taken from contents found in the stomachs of two crocodiles that were shot during the search matched Mr Van Zyl.

Last year a tourist, Stephen Coetzee was trampled to death by a female elephant in Hwange National Park.

Mr Coetzee, from Bulawayo, was taking pictures of the animals when they charged.

Atlanta musician dies after collapsing on stage at concert

Authorities say a musician died after collapsing on stage during a birthday concert in his honor at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta.

Bruce Hampton, a 70-year-old guitarist and singer known as the "grandfather of the jamband scene," died after collapsing Monday night at the end of the show billed as "Hampton 70: A Celebration of Col. Bruce Hampton."

Dumonder Dawson, an investigator with the Fulton County Medical Examiner, said Tuesday morning that the agency was notified of Hampton's death.

The Tedeschi Trucks Band, also on the lineup, posted a statement on its official Facebook page from Hampton's family saying he had died.

After Hampton collapsed, actor Billy Bob Thornton, who was on the bill with members of Widespread Panic, Phish and other musicians, took to the microphone to thank fans and say that they had to attend to something back stage.

Author of 'Younger Next Year' Dead at 58

Dr. Henry S. Lodge, whose series of health-advice books, “Younger Next Year,” written with his patient Chris Crowley, sold in the millions, died on Friday in Manhattan. He was 58.

The cause was prostate cancer, his partner, Laura Yorke, said.

In the late 1990s, Dr. Lodge became concerned about the patients he was seeing at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan, where he was an internist with a specialty in geriatric medicine. Far too many in their 50s and 60s were having strokes, developing diabetes, falling down and suffering fractures.

“You take care of somebody, and you see him gaining five pounds a year and being sedentary,” he told U.S. News & World Report in 2006. “Then really awful things happen — strokes, heart attacks, and people becoming apathetic and withdrawn. It became clear to me that this was lifestyle choice. Very little of it was related to luck or genetics.”

Mr. Crowley, a retired lawyer in his 60s, was a prime example: He was 40 pounds overweight and aging poorly until Dr. Lodge put him on a regimen of regular exercise and healthy eating that returned him to his 50-year-old self.

Together the two men translated their experience into an advice book, “Younger Next Year: A Guide to Living Like 50 Until You’re 80 and Beyond,” published in 2004 by Workman. Alternating chapters, the authors delivered a breezy guide to better living that rested on seven rules that blend physical and spiritual disciplines. Readers were told to work out daily and stop eating junk food, but also to “connect and commit.”

Putting an evolutionary spin on diet and exercise, Dr. Lodge argued that humans remained, from the physical point of view, hunters and gatherers who thrived when in motion and surrounded by others.

The idea of resetting the biological clock proved deeply appealing to the swelling population of Americans approaching old age. The Hartford Courant called the book “a near cult item among some baby boomers, who appear to be fueling a good part of the sales through word of mouth, with one reading it, then pestering a friend to get a copy.”

“Younger Next Year” and the rest of the series, “Younger Next Year for Women: Live Like You’re 50 — Strong, Fit, Sexy — Until You’re 80 and Beyond” (2005), “Younger Next Year Journal” (2006) and “Younger Next Year: The Exercise Program” (2015), have more than two million copies in print and have been translated into 21 languages.

Henry Sears Lodge Jr., known as Harry, was born on Oct. 20, 1958, in Boston and grew up in Beverly, Mass. His father, who died two days before him, was chairman of the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority and the first president of the Metropolitan Center theater for the performing arts in Boston. His grandfather was Henry Cabot Lodge Jr., the Massachusetts senator and ambassador to the United Nations. His mother, the former Elenita Ziegler, was a freelance writer and editor active in civic affairs.

In 1996 Dr. Lodge created New York Physicians, a multi-specialty medical group that, unusually, operates as an independent group practice but maintains an affiliation with Columbia University and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. As it grew, it became an entry point for younger doctors to gain a foothold in the medical profession. He served as its chairman and chief executive until his death.

Man wins bet chugging bottle of tequila, dies minutes later

The tragic incident happened earlier this week in the city La Romana, in eastern Dominican Republic, and it was all captured on video by a cell phone camera.

The young man, identified as Kelvin Rafael Mejía, is first seen on his feet drinking the tequila straight from a bottle. When he is done he is handed the cash prize on a bill at a time and a few seconds later he can barely stand anymore and needs to be assisted by two men on each side.

Shortly after he collapses and never regains consciousness — he was taken to a nearby clinic where he was declared dead.

According to El Universal, the events unfolded after Mejia approached a table where a group of clients were betting money on how much tequila they could drink in a single gulp. He asked to join.

The management of the place, the Vacca Lounge, said the nightclub had no involvement in the deadly incident.

“The only contests we ever do are dance contests or costume contests, with the award of bottle of champagne or other drink,” Vacca Lounge said in a statement.

According to local media, the man was a regular patron at the place.

Woman Dies Caught in Clothing Drop Box

A Pennsylvania woman has died after getting her arm caught in a clothing donation drop-off box.

Northumberland County Coroner James Kelley says 56-year-old Judith Permar died from a combination of trauma injuries she sustained in the accident and hypothermia.

The coroner says the Mount Carmel woman used a step stool to reach into the bin, and her left arm became stuck when the stool collapsed. She broke left her arm and wrist and couldn’t get free.

Investigators believe she went to the drop box about 2 a.m. Sunday. She was found dead more than six hours later.

The drop box is located along a highway in Natalie, a tiny village in Mount Carmel Township. That’s about 60 miles northeast of Harrisburg.

The coroner conducted an autopsy Monday.
